Jamaica Gleaner Commentary

EDITORIAL - The PSC and relative morality
Having set the bar and declared yourself equal to the task, it is hard to elicit sympathy by whining about how difficult that bar is to scale or by complaining of being held to a standard higher than others. Which, essentially is what Prime Minister Bruce Golding did in Parliament on Tuesday.

Saga - from SUVs to FINSAC

After Kenya became politically independent in 1963, the term 'Wabenzi' was coined. This was the word used to describe the post-colonial economic and political elite which had developed a passion for Mercedes Benz motor cars and, later SUVs, often acquired at public expense. We, too, have our own homegrown Jamaican Wabenzi. (Robotham)

Food security flawed, fundamentally

Food security is a little more sophisticated than growing cassava to substitute for imported wheat and rice as world food prices soar, triggering riots in several countries. The cartoonists are having a field day with the 'Cassava Plan'. (Henry)

Crash Plus but no Vaz broken

No! I was not displaced by the chief justice although I did disappear like the millions in some unregulated investment schemes. Anyway, whether 'Hill-advised' or deceived, thousands of Jamaican citizens are worried that they might have been taken for a ride and 'crashed' instead of 'cashed.' Some have found use for the extra 'R'. (Taylor)

The ongoing education debate

Is the current education debate going to end in the near future, or will we be arguing the same issues in 2010? We are a talented, innovative, resourceful, resilient people who have made our mark on the world's stage in many arenas. We cannot allow ourselves to be ascribed the label 'a nation of dunces'... (South-Robinson)
