When renowned musician Robbie Lyn released his instrumental album, Making Notes, in early 2007, he was aware that the appetite for such albums was deficient in the society.
However, Lyn has found reward for his efforts, as in late February he received the Reggae Academy Award for Best Instrumental Album.
The album featured top-class musicians like brothers Glenn and Dalton Browne, Robert Browne (Glen's son), Sly Dunbar, Dwight Pinkney, Cat Coore, Mikey Chung, Dean Fraser, the late Errol Hird, Everald Gayle, Nambo Robinson, David Madden, Earl 'Chinna' Smith, Chico Chin and Uziah 'Sticky' Thompson on percussion, with Pam Hall and Nadine Sutherland providing harmony.
People appreciate
Lyn says, "it's an honour, because it's something that shows that people appreciate the work and effort that I have been doing."
At the time Lyn released Musical Notes, he acknowledged that "although the young people nowadays are a little more harder to please", he still felt that "people who appreciate a certain standard of music and love to hear melodic or harmonic music should find this (album) pleasant to listen to. It's just that the age group seems to be 40 and over, but I still hope we'll get a mixture".
Lyn says he has not embarked upon any more personal projects, but have been working on others and freelancing.
"Just this week I've been working on a project with some Canadians that has to do with the rocksteady era, where they have some of the original musicians and performers working in Tuff Gong studios and they film and record the sessions. People like Ken Boothe, Strange Jah Cole, Leroy Sibbles and others," he says.
Outside of that, Lyn says, "Everything is basically freelancing."
Kind of quiet
He added that "next weekend I'm actually going to be doing the John Holt and Freddy McGregor show with the symphony in Miami. But outside of that, it's kind of quiet and then later on this year I will probably start working on another personal project of mine".
Robbie Lyn has had a lifetime of creating rich harmonic music for various artistes in a career that spans more than three decades as a keyboardist, composer and arranger.
The man has had extensive experience in music, having been a member of Peter Tosh's Word, Sound and Power backing band for six years and participated in the historic One Love Peace Concert, Lyn says for him "the sky is the limit".
Lyn says "occasionally you will catch me on a live show, whether Startime or a show like that".
For most of last year he was on tour with Third World in Europe and also did shows like US Sunsplash, and Japan, and a few shows in the Caribbean.
