Stop ignoring the issues
published: Sunday | March 30, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I am responding to the address by the Lord Bishop of Jamaica and The Cayman Islands at the 138th Anglican Synod. The Church must become more active to deal with social issues that affect the nation. I do agree with Bishop Reid, but I have do draw the line now.

As a server in the Anglican Church for almost 25 years, I have seen where the Church is coming from. The Church, over the past years, has always hidden from issues that affect the nation and that is why I will always say the Church is a sleeping giant because it has lost focus. It is too late for the Church to take on this role when it has had the opportunity to do so in past years and fell asleep, and now that the nation is riddled with corruption, the Church is now getting the message. No, this is not good.

Harsh criticism

I have been giving this message for a long time, and the only response I have received is harsh criticism from those who see the truth and do not address the issues. The nation has been facing a difficult time and has been struggling over the past years, and only a section of the Church speaks out, while the other section is in darkness and sleeping. The nation wants to see the Church on the streets more and more, drawing outcasts to God and speaking to the leaders, especially those who are corrupt, and giving advice to the Government about growth for the economy.

Churches, we need to pull out the stops now and not wait until it is too late to act.

I love the work as a server in the Church and I will remain in that position and advise the Government about growth and help to stamp out corruption.

May God bless and keep you and make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace. Amen.

I am, etc.,
