SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine:

An investigation has been launched into a fire at the Portmore depot which resulted in the destruction of four Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) buses last Saturday night.

About 11:45 p.m., residents near the depot saw a large fire on the compound. They summoned the fire department and, upon their arrival, four of the company's buses were razed, causing damage to the tune of $30 million.

The cause of the fire has still not been ascertained. The JUTC had recently started a redundancy exercise that has seen more than 300 of its employees sent home.
