Calabar, Jago set to shine
published: Saturday | January 19, 2008

Ramone McKenzie ... a strong chance for gold in the 200m. - Ricardo Makyn/Staff Photographer

World Youth 200m champion, Romaine McKenzie and his Calabar High team, could have things their own way at the 23rd staging of the Serge Island-sponsored Howard Jackson Relays at Paul Bogle Junior High School in Morant Bay, today, starting at 9:00 a.m.

McKenzie, along with Jermaine Brown and Oshaine Bailey, should lead their team in the Class One 4x150 and 4x300m events against Camperdown, Holmwood, Morant Bay and St. George's.

Calabar should also fancy their chances in Class Two with Earl Lee and Robert Palmer, who finished one-two at last week's Douglas Forrest Invitational.

Wide-open race

Class Three seems wide open, but Holmwood have always produced a strong 4x600m and this title could go to the Manchester school again.

On the girls' side, St. Jago, with Yanice Martin, Candice Walker and Yanique Haye in Class One, should continue their tradition of winning most events.

Queen's High are also heading to the east and they too will be looking to win a few events.

Top Primary and Junior High school, John Mills, along with Windward Road and Red Hills, are the big teams in the mini section.

The events to be contested are, 4x150m, 4x300m for all classes - One-Four, 4x600 and medley open for high schools, while primary and junior high athletes will contest 4x150m and 4x300m only.

College and institution athletes, like their minors, will face the starter in only the 4x150m and 4x600m races.

The meet is set to benefit from the support of sponsors Serge Islands, NCB, JNBS, BNS, Juci Patties, Golden Shore Hotel, RST Industrial and Young Sang Bakery.
