Holmwood, KC should take top honours
published: Saturday | January 19, 2008

Anthony Foster, Freelance Reporter

Stewart

Holmwood and Kingston College (KC) will head the girls and boys teams, respectively, for today's inaugural Central Hurdles and Relays at G. C. Foster College in Angels, Spanish Town.

Several top high school athletes are expected to be on show, mainly KC's Kerion Stewart and Holmwood's Bobbie-Gay Wilkins.

Stewart is the national junior record holder for the 110m hurdles with 13.53 seconds, which gave him second at the Carifta Games in Turks & Caicos last April. But Simon Dickens of Jamaica College (JC), who ran 13.66 to win at his school's meet two weeks ago and Akeem Smith of Wolmer's, should be in the mix.

Tough time

National representative Wilkins should feature on her school's 4x400m and 4x800m relay teams, which should also include Keno Haven, another of the team's seasoned campaigners.

Holmwood, who over the years have dominated the relays, could be in for a tough time this season as several of their top stars have graduated.

Manchester High, with Natoya Goule and Shana-Gay Tracey key members of the 4x400m and 4x800m relays, pose a real threat, while Edwin Allen with Gayon Evans, Kaycea Jones and Shawna Anderson, should take the Class One 4x100m.

In Class Two, Manchester, to be led by Leslie-Ann Mitchell and Edwin Allen with Amoy Blake, should battle out top honours.

The lower classes are also expected to produce top finishes for the central schools for the girls, while KC should be a force to reckon with in the boys sprint relays.

In the clubs and institutions events, it is not clear which Maximum Velocity Performance (MVP) and Racers Track club runners will participate, but the University of Technology (UTech) and GC Foster College should produce some exciting contests, most of which the latter with Anastasia Le-Roy, Schillonie Calvert and Rosemarie White should win.

Vere, Immaculate, and Bridgeport are other key participants among the 20 schools, while It Dat will add to the five institutions for action in 70m, 80, 100, 110m hurdles, 300m hurdles, 400m hurdles, 4x100m all classes, along with open 4x400 and 4x800m, which is a qualifier for Penn Relays.
