Garrick guides team to victory
published: Saturday | January 19, 2008

FORMER WEST Indies batsman Leon Garrick scored a brilliant century to lead pre-season favourites St. Ann Jamaica Bauxite Partners to a convincing 172-run victory over Tryall Hotel in the final of the John Issa/SuperClubs All-island hotels cricket competition.

In the match played at Port Rhoades Sports Club in Discovery Bay, St. Ann, man-of-the-match Garrick struck a masterful unbeaten 104 to lead his team to 242 for three off their allotted 40 overs.

Garrick, who emerged the competition's leading rungetter with more than 400 runs, was scoring his second century and shared in a match-winning, 136-run, second-wicket partnership with Karl McDonald, 60, a former national youth player, after the early loss of wicketkeeper/batsman Shane Powell, who made 12.

Garrick, who is determined to make the Jamaican national senior team, again, in less than two years, started slowly but warmed up and struck seven boundaries and two sixes.

Destined for a century

His partner, McDonald, who seemed destined for a century before an unlucky and bizarre run-out cost him his wicket, scored freely despite the Tryall bowlers' efforts, led by Hanover parish representative Keith Beckford (2-26).

When Tryall batted, despite opener's Chan Wakefield's quick-fire 24 off 27 deliveries, no other batsmen could find a clue to nullify the mystifying spin of Jamaica player and the competition's leading bowler, Andre Dwyer, who picked up five for 18 off six overs. He finished the competition with 30 wickets.

Tryall eventually fell for 70 all out off 23 overs, with extras contributing 23.

The champions collect $90,000 and a new championship trophy while Tryall will pick up $60,000 at the awards luncheon, to be announced soon.
