The Editor, Sir:I would like to commend the pastor and The Gleaner ('Save our men' - front page headline) for the thoughtful words on this very important topic.
I do think that while the problem has been very clearly identified, it is time that the church, the media and the state begin developing actionable steps to reverse this trend.
I grew up in Kingston 11 and know first-hand how at the grass roots we glorify the 'rude boy' mentality. This happens both in male and female circles.
It was always a struggle and we grew up thinking only the 'strong survive'.
Without the proper context, this can be easily construed by funda-mentalists to mean one must fight, kill, etc., to survive.
Creating hope
I say it is time to revise the educational and church teachings to allow more literature and teachings that illuminate the greatness of our people and our nation.
There needs to be more clips that show all of our successful doctors, lawyers, policemen, soldiers, etc.
We must place these hard-working, law-abiding professionals back into the spotlight, thereby creating hope in our society and, more importantly, the youth of today!
I would love to share my ideas, time and resources with you or The Gleaner to help to begin a different approach to solving the issues of crime in my precious birthplace!
I am, etc.,
