Jamaica's men on a mission set for February
published: Saturday | December 29, 2007

Curling

A special men's conference is being planed for February 15 and 16 next year.

Dubbed 'Covenant: Jamaica's Men on a Mission', it is being led by a team of men from various denominations who have determined to help Jamaica's men to assume their rightful role in the society.

According to the organisers, the objectives of the conference are:

  • To evangelise Jamaican men to a commitment to God;

  • To motivate them to reflect this new commitment in their lives, at home, at work, and in the wider community;

  • To challenge men to take an improved leadership role in churches;

  • To encourage them to provide mentorship for our young men, (particularly those without fathers,) so that there is a gradual, but lasting change, in society in terms of the role men currently play in the home, our churches and society in general.

    Towards the end of the con-ference, participants will be en-couraged to make a covenant or promise to change their behaviour. The conference is seen as marking just the start of a national movement which, it is hoped, will continue to engender change in society, and changed behaviours by Jamaica's men.

    Guest speakers who have confirmed their attendance include Dr. Alvin Curling, former minister of government and Speaker of the House of the Province of Ontario Canada; and the Rev. Lennox Walker, a Jamaican who is Bishop of the Praise Cathedral in Toronto, Canada.

    The conference will begin on Friday, February 15 at 6:30 p.m. with a reception and opening, ceremony at the Mona Visitors Lodge, which will be followed by an all-day session at the Jamaica Conference Centre on Saturday, February 16, starting at 8:00 a.m.

    Chairman of the conference, Mr. Courtney Campbell, said that men 18 years old and over are welcome to attend; however, they are being asked to indicate that intention by registering. Registration forms are available from members of the Planning Committee and may also take place by emailing covenant. jamaica@gmail.com, or by con-tacting the Secretariat at: 578-3068.

    Conference organisers include a cross-section of men from various denominations, including:

    Mr. Courtney Campbell

    Mr. Carlton Rodney

    Mr. Reynold Scott

    Dr. Aston Wood

    Mr. Karl James
