Doctor's advice - The facts about 'multiples'
published: Sunday | December 16, 2007

  • Q. Doctor, can you tell me the truth about 'multiple orgasms'?I am female, working in the hotel industry, and age 39. All my life I have assumed that women just have one orgasm, and that is that! Admittedly, I have heard some of my girlfriends talking about 'discharging more than once', but I thought they were just fantasising.

Now doctor, I am married. In fact, my husband and I recently celebrated our 10th anniversary. Well, maybe 'celebrated' is not quite the right word, because we have not been getting on too well recently. He is away a lot, as a result of his job, and I have been feeling neglected. Also, I have a suspicion that while he was on a business trip to the U.S. he was fooling around with some other woman.

Well, one evening last month I was feeling a little lonely. I met a male hotel guest, a guy of about my own age who came from France. He was charming and handsome, and he was very grateful when I helped him sort out his onward hotel reservations.

In fact, he was so grateful that he invited me to dinner. We got on real well during the meal, and I am afraid I had a couple of glasses of wine, which weakened my resistance. You can guess the result. We went to bed together, and this guy proved to be a great lover. Most important, I found that I orgasmed again and again with him. I do not know how many times it was, doctor, but it might have been seven or eight.

The next day, he had to move on to somewhere in the French West Indies, and I do not expect I will ever see him again. He didn't leave an address or number. But what happened has left me with a sense of bewilderment. I am just amazed at the way my body reacted to him.

In particular, I am astonished at the fact that I had those 'multiple climaxes'. I did not know I was capable of such a thing. As you can imagine, this has made me feeling somewhat uncertain about my relationship with my husband.

So can you enlighten me by giving me a few facts about these 'multiple orgasms', doc?

Do most women only discharge once for the night? Or do most females have multiple climaxes?

And now that the French guy has gone, do you think I will be able to do it again?

And finally, what on earth do I do about my husband? When he gets back from his current business trip, should I tell him that I have learned to discharge again and again?

A I can understand that you feel a little bewildered and muddled. Fortunately, you don't seem to be saying that you are in love with this French guy - because that would make life even more complicated! It sounds as though he will not be returning. Incidentally, I hope you practised safe sex with him.

Now, let me try and give you the basic facts about multiple orgasms, in males and females. As I am sure you know, MEN generally have only ONE climax. They then need quite a time to 'recover' before they can do it again.

Admittedly, there are some groups - notably those who practise 'Tantric' sex - who claim that they can teach a guy to have multiple climaxes, one after the other. Personally, I have never encountered a male patient who can genuinely do this.

What about WOMEN? Well, it has been known for centuries that some females can discharge again and again - for instance, having a second climax only a minute or two after the first one.

Up until the 1960s, this was considered by most doctors to be a pretty rare 'feat'.

Nowadays, we know that over half of all women can achieve multiple orgasms - if they are in the right mood, and are with a skilled and romantic partner.

And now you have done it! And you can certainly do it again.

Frankly, I do NOT think you should tell your husband that you are now 'a multiple lady'. It would be better if you just encouraged him to give you more stimulation after you have reached your first climax - and see what happens.

  • QDoc, I am a 40-year-old guy who has suddenly lost his nature. Would Viagra help me?

A Very probably. It produces erection in around 80 per cent of those who try it.

However, you should first go to a doctor for a good check-up - to try to find out why you have lost your nature. It could be psychological, or it could be due to a physical cause - like 'sugar'.

  • Q I am female, age 35, and my mother has real bad rheumatism. Does this mean I will get it too?

A No, not at all. Keep your weight down, and avoid putting excessive strain on joints like the knees and hips. With luck, you may escape rheumatism altogether.

  • Q I think I am just starting the menopause. Is it inevitable that I will have a dreadful time?

A No, it isn't. Quite a few women 'sail through' the menopause with no problems at all.

Admittedly, quite a few others develop distressing hot flushes (also known as 'hot flashes' to the Americans) and night-time sweats. But these days, those things can be successfully treated.

  • Q Doc, is it true that there is some medication that will help me regain my hair? I am going pretty bald!

A Well, there are two drugs which sometimes help balding men - and women. The more successful one is called 'minoxidil,' and you have to apply it to the scalp, all round the 'mole' area. You do this a couple of times a day for many months.

Please note that results of minoxidil are not guaranteed!

So you could spend quite a lot of money on it and not get a good result.

  • Q My wife says she would like to try using a vibrator when we are having sex. Is there any danger in this, doc?

A None at all. Vibrators are almost totally free of 'side effects,' provided you clean them carefully after each use. And they help a lot of ladies to discharge.

  • Q I am a 29-year-old woman, and I think I am cursed - because I have fibroids. A herbalist has told me he could heal them. Is this true?

A I know of no way in which herbs could heal fibroids. You need to be treated by a 'gyno,' who will probably get rid of them by performing minor surgery for you. Your email indicates that you want to get pregnant - and getting rid of the fibroids could help you conceive. Good luck.

  • Q I have just been told that I have 'slight enlargement of the prostate gland'. Will this ruin my sex life, doc?

A No. If the prostate continues to enlarge, it may well give you some problems with passing urine. But it should not harm your sexual function.
