Youth and climate change
published: Monday | November 19, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

The issue of climate change enjoys an international focus, through major advocacies by former United States President Al Gore, and locally, through the Jamaica Environmental Trust.

Much research has been conducted on the issue both locally and internationally, and reveals that the effects of climate change leave island states vulnerable to possible rising sea levels over time, along with many other threats. Youth are especially vulnerable, considering that the threats of climate change and other environmental issues will affect us today and in the future.

What becomes very clear to me is that there has not been a strong enough voice coming from our student leaders on the issue. It is understandable that our university student unions and guilds need to advocate for such matters as student fees and other pressing needs at this time. However, there needs to be a clearer voice on long-term issues that will affect our future, along with active participation in current activities. Maybe some work is being done, but we need to do more.

I am, etc.,
