Studying entertainment at the tertiary level is now a possibility with the University of the West Indies' (UWI) introduction of a Bachelor of Arts degree in 'Entertainment and Cultural Enterprise Management' in September of this year.

In an effort to improve the structure of the entertainment business, the programme will train persons in various aspects of the creative arts. "The entertainment programme is in response to the pleas of persons in the entertainment industry to have management training for persons who operate in the entertainment industry. The unit saw it as opportune to pursue this development," programme co-ordinator Kam-au Amen explains.

He says the degree programme will not only cover music, but audio-visual media, digital communication, fashion, and other areas.

So far, the programme has been getting an excellent response, with packed classes and eager students. Courses offered include 'Issues in Media and Communication', 'Popular Jamaican Music', 'Entertainment and the Digital Convergence', 'Music of the English-speaking Caribbean', and 'Culture and Conduct in the Dancehall'.
