'Dean' puts events on hold
published: Sunday | August 19, 2007

The threat from the powerful Category Four Hurricane Dean, has forced the postponement of several sporting events.

In a release late Friday the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) announced the postponement of all football matches for today.

The competitions affected are the Colourscape Women's Knockout games; the JFF all-island Under-15 and Under-13 games.

The JFF board of directors meeting scheduled for today is also postponed.

Basketball off

However, the Jamaica Football Federation Referees Commission (JFFRC) seminars for Premier League referees, which started yesterday will end today at the GC Foster College.

In basketball, the Western Basketball Association has taken the decision to postpone the Oasis division two men's basketball league semi-finals scheduled for today. New dates will be released.

The Caribbean Women's and Men's 15-a-side Rugby Championships, scheduled for this week in Grand Cayman, August 18-26, has been cancelled. The Jamaica team was scheduled to depart yesterday.

In a release, Pearse Higgins president, North America and The West Indies Rugby Association, expressed his regret and thanked the Cayman Rugby Union and all of the organisers and volunteers who have worked so hard to prepare for the event.

"We regret that the weather has forced you to cancel what would have been another outstanding event in Cayman. We look forward to having another opportunity of staging this event in Cayman in the future. We can now look forward to November and the NAWIRA Sevens tournament in the Bahamas," Higgins said.

Cricket called off

All the matches in the Jamaica Cricket Association Limited Overs cricket competition were also called off. Weather permitting, the games will be played this weekend.

Hurricane Dean has also stalled the 16th Senior Caribbean Area Squash Association tournament.

The tournament was down to its closing stages, but organisers were forced to abandon the semi-finals and finals set for Friday and yesterday as several teams flew out of Kingston Friday morning to escape Hurricane Dean.
