THE EDITOR, Sir: This is proving a very interesting election campaign indeed. I have noticed the articles in both newspapers, suggesting the quality of the recent debates would determine the outcome of the election on August 27.
Please allow me to share the view that members of the Jamaican public are well aware of the strengths and weaknesses of those on both sides of the political divide and the presentations may not have as great an impact as the academics seem inclined to think.
A proven asset
The Prime Minister is a proven asset to her country at home and on the international scene. Her genuine warmth seems to have earned her recognition and respect in international forums. There is great confidence that in her, supporters of both political parties feel valued and this is a singular and an invaluable asset that she brings to the role of Prime Minister of Jamaica.
At this time, the Jamaican people are not primarily concerned with 'actors' who are good at performing in front of a camera, but rather, seek the sort of leadership that will unite the country and heal wounds, as we seek to continue to grow and develop as a nation, following the abolition of the slave trade and our struggles toward social justice, and political and economic independence.
The majority of Jamaicans are very proud of Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, admire her loyalty, tenacity and willingness to give unstintingly of her best in service to the Jamaican people. Aware of her own talents, she also recognises and values the talents of other members of her team. We trust her and her ministers to take decisions that will strengthen the Jamaican economy, as well as benefit those with greatest need on both sides of the political divide.
