LETTER OF THE DAY - Pastoral affirmation of leadership
published: Sunday | August 19, 2007

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Our nation has been experiencing a serious and ever-worsening crisis on nearly every front - social, moral, economic and governance leadership. The situation demands bold and decisive action, especially from persons in positions of influence.

The ordinary is not sufficient. There has to be a willingness to step beyond our inhibitions and fears and act in self-sacrificial ways to ensure the best national interest. Jamaica at all cost must be returned to a path of peace, truth, justice and prosperity. Regardless of the outcome of the elections, we must all rally to build our nation. We must all take responsibility for Jamaica's destiny by active involvement and engagement.

The best decision

I believe this is the most strategically important election since 1980. Hence, every Jamaican should be careful to make the best decision at the polls as we will all have to bear the consequences of our decision. I do not want fellow Jamaicans to choose, void of truth, hence, I deem it necessary and as part of my responsibility to make a pastoral affirmation of our leaders.

There has been much talk, doubt, fear and questioning about the sincerity of faith of the Honourable Portia Simpson Miller and the trustworthiness of Mr. Bruce Golding. We should always be careful not to be too quick to judge the motive of another person's behaviour. Yet, I understand the scepticism.

Having interacted with both leaders, I can speak from my best knowledge and understanding of them. The Prime Minister, the Honourable Portia Simpson Miller, is sincere, but young in faith, knowledge and application of the principles of the Christian faith. Decide whether you think she is the best person to lead the best team with the capability to move the nation forward at this time, but do not doubt her sincerity.

Similarly, Mr. Golding can be trusted to do what he says. I am convinced that he is genuinely desirous of change and will work sacrificially to accomplish it. Decide whether you think he is the best person to lead the nation at this time, but do not doubt his trustworthiness. He is a different man than he was years ago. He is certainly more mature, focused and determined to create a new Jamaica.

I have publicly and repeatedly said for the last 10 years that the two politicians that have obviously experienced an inner change of heart and thinking are the Honourable Portia Simpson Miller and Mr. Bruce Golding. I am happy to now see them both as leaders of our two major political parties.

My personal view on which of the two I believe is best to take the nation into this next phase, I reserve for another time.

I am, etc.,

AL MILLER

Pastor
