Wolmer's Boys gained a fourth consecutive hold of the Alexander Cup, schoolboy tennis' most coveted title, whey they blanked Campion 5-0 in the ISSA/Cable and Wireless High Schools final at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre yesterday.
However, it was the girls from Immaculate High who really bossed proceedings this year, making a historic clean sweep of the girls 14's, 16's and 19's category.
"It's just a great feeling right now, I've been to three finals before but we came up short on those occasions. We finally did it this time and I'm proud of the girls," said a beaming Arthur Phillpotts, head coach of the Immaculate team.
"I'd like to dedicate this victory to the principal and vice-principal for all the support that they have given us," added Phillpotts, who has been with Immacualte for the last 15 years, following a 3-0 win for the Under-19 team over rivals Holy Childhood.
"I just told them you have to work hard on the practise days, be disciplined, put out your best effort on match days, and this is the result," he said.
BLISTERING START
In boys 19 action, top junior and team captain Kristopher Martin got the Heroes Circle team off to a blistering start when he put away Campion's Stephen Griffiths 6-1, 6-3.
Following suit, number two singles player Vashaun Wright went on to notch a 6-4, 6-4 straight set victory over Daniel Johnson, before Kevar Bartley battled past Cevan Messam 6-3, 7-6 (5) to put the match out of Campion's reach.
In doubles action Martin teamed up with Wright to see off the pair of Griffith and Tomlinson 6-3, before Bartley paired with Steven Hunter to stop Stephen Hamilton and Matthew Campbell 6-4. Martin also walked away with the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Most Outstanding Male Player awards.
Immaculate's Shaneka Knight was the female MVP, while the Most Outstanding Player award went to Haley Foreman.
In Girls Under-16 action, Immaculate blanked Bishop Gibson 3-0, and in Girls 14 action Immaculate stopped Wolmer's Girl's 3-1. The boys 16 final was stopped by rain, but at that time Campion led Wolmer's 2-1.
Meanwhile, Tennis Jamaica president, Phillip Gore, and his wife Christine, were recognised with a plaque from sponsors, Cable and Wireless, for their contribution to the sport.
