THE WEST Indies defeated Bangladesh by 99 runs on Thursday to secure their first win in the Super Eight phase of the World Cup.

Jamaican paceman Daren Powell played a crucial part in the regional side's victory, taking 3-38 off his allotted 10 overs and for this, he has been selected as The Gleaner's Top Performer of the Week.

Powell, along with support from new-ball bowler Corey Collymore, exposed the tech-nique and temperament of the Bangladesh top order with another impressive bowling display.

The two broke the top order of the Bangladesh batting while sharing five wickets, which left the Asian team on 52 for six.

Collymore snapped up the first two wickets and then Powell got into the act when he had dangerman Mohammad Ashraful caught at mid-wicket for two. He also removed Javed Omar caught at first slip for 16 and captain Habibul Bashar caught at third slip for 12.
