The Editor, Sir:
I must use this space to publicly thank a woman, Dr. Sharmaine Mitchell, who, to me, has a God-given calling for the work she does as an obstetrician/gynaecologist.
Recently, my six-week-old daughter was choking on her milk. She was having a slight cold, so that compounded the matter.
As a new mother, I was frantic with fright and tried everything possible to get the baby breathing alright again.
I tried calling the paediatrician but to no avail. Almost panicking at this point, I called Dr. Mitchell and, without hesitation, she told me to keep the baby upright while she took my number and said she would get help.
In less than three minutes, someone from Ambucare called me and aided me through the process of assisting me on how to handle the situation after which my baby was fine.
The ambulance technician asked me to get back in touch with Dr. Mitchell as she was the one who had called and, even when asked about payment in case the ambulance was to be deployed, told them not to worry as she would deal with that but urged them to call me.
The thing that touched me, however, was that when I called back Dr. Mitchell she had no idea who she was talking to and said all she responded to was a distressed mom with a distressed baby.
She asked for no detail outside of the essential. She is truly a woman with a warm heart and I'm happy for people like her.
I am, etc.,
Thankful mummy
