Good job, PM
published: Monday | July 24, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller deserves some praise for her attempts to revitalise the sugar industry by securing a loan of US$100 million from Brazil.

There can be little doubt that the sugar industry has been, for many years, the most labour-intensive industry in our island.

DEFENDING SUGAR

Many years ago, on one of Sir Alexander Bustamante's visits on official duties to London, England, the British Government suggested to him that he should cut back on the planting of sugar cane. Sir Alexander's reply was, "there is no way that I am going to do such a thing", and he never did.

This industry has so much potential and we have so many scientists who are capable of fulfilling such potential, that it is difficult to understand why more emphasis is not placed in this area.

I am, etc.,

LEO MARCH C.D.
