Create a fund for the poor
published: Monday | July 24, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I am a senior citizen and time and time again, there is an appeal on television to give financial assistance to some poor ailing child or adult who needs medical treatment.

These medical treatments are most often costly or cannot be accessed here in Jamaica. The families of the sick send out appeals everytime a situation like this occurs. Sometimes even if you would like to make a contribution, the television station does not display the account number long enough.

TRANSPARENT

I suggest a more central fund, fully transparent and direct, for people to contribute to on a consistent basis towards the urgent medical needs of less fortunate individuals.

This fund can possibly be led by an organisation or media-house such as The Gleaner, to help more consistently in the process, instead of having these isolated appeals all the time.

I am, etc.,
