Solving crime with modern technology
published: Monday | July 24, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

For sometime I have wondered why has violent crimes been contained in a city like New York and has not made any significant escalation in Toronto. I don't for one moment believe that it has to do with arming their police force more. I believe it has to do with arming your cities with technology which will deter the criminals.

By technology I mean, having video cameras in varied locations throughout our crime-ridden communities, so that what one camera may miss, another one will pick up and using GPS Tracking to assist with this. It means have some noise sensors, so that explosions can be detected. It means having fingerprinting and DNA analysis available to fight crime.

ADJUSTMENT TO LAWS

In addition to the above, there must also be adjustments to our laws to allow such evidence to be entered into our court system where it may not now be allowed.

Believe me, it is not because criminal minds aren't contem-plating wicked acts in the big metropolitan cities which I earlier mentioned. It is because many of them know that technology will eventually catch up, which acts as the deterrent.

My hope is that the authorities will hear this cry and give it some deserved consideration.

I am, etc.,

RANDY WILLIAMS
