IN PREPARATION for the new state-of-the-art telecommunications network which the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) will be establishing, Cable & Wireless Jamaica (CWJ) has provided free technology training for three members of the force.
Sergeants Graville Williams, Rohan Elliot and Maurice Wilks recently completed a two-week telecommunications training programme which dealt with topics such as cellular, microwave and satellite transmission systems, transmission media and an introduction to the regulatory bodies that govern telecommunications.
GOOD FOUNDATION
Describing the training course as "very helpful", Sergeant Williams said that he now feels a lot more comfortable about using the new system. "The exposure to basic telecommunications is a good foundation that we can build on and whenever the new systems come we will be able to relate quite easily," he said.
Similar sentiments were ex-pressed by Seargent Wilks who said, "The training has really given us new insight into the operations of our technical equipment. With our working knowledge of how telecommunications technology functions, we'll be better able to maintain the new system when it comes and manage any problems that might occur."
Percy Chue, CWJ's Learning and Development manager, said that having completed the course, the officers are now in a position to pass the information on to their colleagues. "They have gotten a good overview of general telecoms and all three of them should be able to assist in disseminating the information across the force," he said.
The JCF will be establishing a new telecommunications network to improve the efficiency of its communications islandwide. It is anticipated that the new system will be operational in time for the hosting of the 2007 Cricket World Cup, which is scheduled to kick-off in March 2007.
