Pakistan offers free schooling to one-child families
ISLAMABAD (Reuters): PAKISTANI FAMILIES that have only one child will have that child's education paid for by the government under a novel plan to try and bring down the country's rapid population growth.

VIENNA, Austria (Reuters): PRESIDENT GEORGE W. Bush, seeking to reassure Europeans over the treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, said yesterday that he wanted to eventually close the prison and send inmates back to their home countries.


HAITI: Captors demand ransom for missionary's life
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP): KIDNAPPERS WHO seized a Canadian missionary from his home in Haiti have threatened to kill him unless a US$45,000 (euro35,590) ransom is paid, an associate said yesterday as authorities worked to win his release.
