ST. GEORGE'S College will open its doors to a new Acting Principal, next month. Fred William Kennedy, an old boy of the college who spent several years in Canada, will assume duties September 1.
According to information on the school's web site, Dr. Kennedy attended St. George's from 1961 to 1968. While there, he was the secretary of the student council, prefect, editor of the yearbook and a keen tennis player.
JESUITS
Dr. Kennedy entered the Jesuits for a short period after sixth form. He completed his first degree at the University of the West Indies in 1973 and taught at York Castle High School in St. Ann and Trench Town Comprehensive High. In 1984, Dr. Kennedy obtained his Masters in Education and in the following year, was awarded the Doctor of Education at the University of Toronto.
Between 1977 and 2003, he taught at four different high schools in Toronto and served as Vice Principal at two schools in Ontario, Canada.
In June, The Gleaner reported that St. George's principal Lloyd Fearon would step down at the end of the school term. He, however, denied speculations that he was being forced from the post because of the 'F' grade that the school was given by Dr. Dennis Minott's controversial study based on the school's 2003 CXC performance. Mr. Fearon explained that he was stepping down to take up a three-year doctoral scholarship in educational administration with a focus on school assessment in the United States. This was confirmed by the acting chairman of the school, Father Jim Webb.
