Cops raid illegal gun-repair shop - Home-made weapons, ammo found
published: Thursday | August 12, 2004

By Glenroy Sinclair, Staff Reporter

MEMBERS OF the Organised Crime Investigation Division (OCID) have busted what they believe is an illegal mini-gun repair shop in Portmore, St. Catherine, where a number of home-made guns are being manufactured.

Head of OCID, Superintendent Norman Gordon, told The Gleaner yesterday that during a raid of the premises yesterday afternoon several guns and ammunition were found.

Among the cache were: one M-16 rifle, one semi-automatic pistol, one high-powered home-made rifle, two home-made handguns and 18 rounds of ammunition.

FOUR TAKEN INTO CUSTODY

"Several components of illegal guns were found, along with pieces of tools used to repair guns and manufacture home-made weapons. The evidence is there to suggest that this is a major gun repair shop," said Superintendent Gordon.

Four persons, who were found at the shop, and have since been taken into custody are now being interrogated by the lawmen. The Gleaner understands that the illegal gunshop had been under surveillance for some time and yesterday the police swooped down on a section of the community known as 'Pig City', where the arms and ammunition were found.

This is a depressed community located between Passage Fort and Waterford, off Passage Fort Drive.

Contacted yesterday, Deputy Commissioner Lucius Thomas said this was part of the relentless effort to remove guns from the street.
