Parking for the disabled
published: Wednesday | August 11, 2004

THE EDITOR Sir:

THE MAYOR of Kingston has announced plans to allow disabled persons to park "anywhere" on the streets. No doubt that this new drive to make the city seem more friendly to disabled persons will be very welcomed by many people. Any such initiative by the city keepers must in general be embraced.

I would however ask that careful analysis of this be done before

implementation. As far as I understand it, "no parking" zones are generally designed to enhance public safety. Hence areas such as around fire hydrants are designated no parking areas. I only wish to encourage the Mayor and his office that in their quest to make the city friendly to disabled persons, that they do not subject the very persons they wish to embrace and certainly everyone else, to further hazards.

I submit that maybe what the Mayor should examine is to have specific areas designated as parking areas for the disabled, rather than allow them to park "anywhere."

I am, etc.,
