Police probe threats against Mayor Notice
published: Wednesday | August 11, 2004

By Glenroy Sinclair, Staff Reporter

SPANISH TOWN Mayor Dr. Raymoth Notice has been summoned to an emergency meeting with the top brass of the CIB Headquarters in downtown Kingston, following reports of alleged death threats made against his life.

A senior officer who spoke with The Gleaner yesterday said the police were scheduled to meet with Dr. Notice today to discuss the matter. The officer said based on the outcome of the meeting, the decision might be made to facilitate the Mayor with security coverage.

SOURCE UNKNOWN

Reports are that on at least three occasions the Mayor received information that there was a plot to kill him. While the source of the threat is unknown, the police are taking no chances and have launched an investigation into the matter.

Contacted yesterday, the Mayor said that he had no fear and quoted a section of Psalms 21. Informed police sources said the threats seemed to be coming from person(s) with connection to the St. Catherine Parish Council and not persons affiliated to any gangs.

In the meantime, it was business as usual yesterday in the commercial district of the old capital, following the burial of Oliver 'Bubba' Smith, the reputed leader of the 'One Order' gang, which reportedly operates a multi million-dollar extortion racket in Spanish Town.

Members of the security forces were out in their droves patrolling the streets. Assistant Commissioner George Williams said on Monday that measures were in place to prevent any disturbances during and after the funeral. Senior Superintendent Hector 'Bingi' White, who is a part of the operational team in Spanish Town, said his team was maintaining a very strong presence in the troubled parts of the community.
