By Leonardo Blair, Staff ReporterOPERATIONS AT the Metropolitan Management Transport Holdings Limited (MMTH) will be wound up Wednesday, Information Minister Burchell Whiteman said on Monday.
The company was established by Government in 1995 to develop infrastructure in the public passenger transport sector within the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region.
At a post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House Senator Whiteman said the decision was taken to wind-up the company because it had served its purpose of addressing problems in the public transportation system.
"The establishment of the MMTH was a part of the Ministry's plan to address a number of major problems facing public transportation in the KMTR and to put in place a system capable of meeting the demands of the commuting public," he said.
"The major elements of the institutional framework for these public transport systems have been planned and are being implemented. In the interest of eliminating functional redundancies and duplications within public sector entities and departments, it is proposed that the MMTH be wound-up," he said.
The company's commercial functions are expected to be incorporated within other public sector entities, while its other functions may be transferred to or merged with those of the JUTC and the Commissioner of Lands, or reverted to the Ministry of Transport and Works.
All depot lands will also be vested in the Commissioner of Lands.
The value of the MMTH's improvements to buildings on these properties is to be transferred to the JUTC, which will also assume the responsibility for the development and construction of depot facilities under lease agreements with the Commissioner of Lands.
