Raining roses
published: Sunday | February 8, 2004

RED ROSES are the select bloom for Valentine's Day because, it is said, the rose was a sacred flower to Venus, goddess of love.

Whatever its origin, the rose is undeniably the best-known symbol of beauty and love. It is common knowledge that red roses mean 'I love you'.

February 14 is the most important holiday for florists, accounting for 32 per cent of annual sales. Researchers say that 73 per cent of people who buy flowers to send on Valentine's Day are male...only 27 per cent are female.

In the United States, both local and imported roses are the blooms of choice.

Approximately 110 million roses...the majority of them being red...are routinely sold and delivered within a three-day time period during the Valentine's Day celebrations.

Among all the gifts that are traditionally sent on Valentine's Day, women prefer romantic roses, we understand.
