Stem drug importation
published: Friday | July 25, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IDENTIFYING PROBLEMS is the first step in solving them. Everyone knows that Jamaica has drug problems, the world has drug problems but we need to deal with ours. There are dire consequences for attempting to export drugs from our country. Every day one hears of cases of people being imprisoned and fined for trying to export drugs; it is very rare that persons are caught importing substances into our island; and that is not because it is not happening. The substances have to be imported since we don't have poppy fields to produce opium and cocaine is produced from the coca plant; only marijuana is locally grown.

So why is it we put so much into stopping the exportation while there isn't much being done to stem the importation into our country.

It seems we put a good name and other countries' interests ahead of ours. We need to think. So now that we've identified a major problem we may (just now) start to find solutions, since there's no way we can help our drug addicts and stop exportation, when the substance is being incessantly imported.

I am, etc.,

D. WALKER
