The road work has begun
published: Friday | July 25, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I RECENTLY drove by the community of Hermitage in the constituency of Eastern St. Andrew and was very pleased to see that the long awaited work to repair and upgrade the Escarpment Road in that community had finally begun.

This road surface had been in a very deplorable condition for many years and even thought it was placed on the books, on several occasions, including by then Member of Parliament Colin Campbell, nothing was done.

Current M.P. St. Aubyn Bartlett also raised questions in Parliament about this road when I visited the House earlier this year. This also got nowhere.

It seems to me that had the decent residents of Hermitage, a community in which I once resided, not staged a peaceful yet forceful demonstration to register their disgust and utter frustration with the lack of attention to this road condition, then nothing would have been done.

So while appreciation must be extended to the former M.P. Colin Campbell for submitting this road for repair to the National Works Agency and also to current M.P. St. Aubyn Barlett for his questions to the Minister in Parliament, this is really a victory fought and won by the people of Hermitage and they should accept all credit.

I would therefore like to "big up" all my friends in Hermitage, Labourites, PNP and the Independents who all came together to get their road done; it looks good!

This is how I want to see all constituents of Eastern St. Andrew come together and demand proper representation not only from our government, but particularly from the persons we vote to send to Parliament and to the KSAC. They must perform.

I am, etc.,

MARK J. RODNEY
