ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The Statistical Institute of Jamaica on behalf of the Government of Jamaica, adopts this
medium to express its sincere thanks to the people of Jamaica for their cooperation in the
2011 Population and Housing Census.
As is expected in any national undertaking of this magnitude and complexity, a large
number of individuals and organizations, both government and non-government, have
participated in its planning and execution. Their contribution is hereby acknowledged.
Collaboration and cooperation at the regional level has been a feature of Caribbean
Censuses for decades and for this census, CARICOM through the Regional Census
Coordinating Committee, provided valuable support. The financial support from The
United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for the publicity programme is hereby
acknowledged.
The members of the Technical Committee; representatives from the University of the
West Indies, the Planning Institute of Jamaica, the technical specialists from the
Ministries of Health, Education, Housing and The Environment, Transport and Works,
all contributed to the technical deliberations.
The publicity programme gained valuable assistance from Mr Curtis Myrie of Ideal
Promotions. XSOMO International Limited undertook the printing of the questionnaires
and also had the responsibility for the electronic capture of the information from the
questionnaires. STATIN would like especially to recognize Mr. Errol Anderson and the
XSOMO team; Mr Neil Williams, Miss Cara Murray, Messers Douglas Aris and Andrew
Wilkinson and Miss Jascith Riley. W and S Printing Services provided valuable support
for the printing of documents and manuals to meet the deadlines for training.
The planning, design and execution of this, the fourteenth census, was carried out
mainly by the staff of the Statistical Institute. A large number of the staff of STATIN
from every Division participated in this exercise. The Director General, Miss Sonia
Jackson as Census Officer, in accordance with the requirements of the Statistics Act, was
responsible for the coordination of all census activities. The planning, organization and
management was led by the Division of Censuses, Social and Demographic Statistics,
headed by Dr. Valerie Nam, assisted by Mrs Juliet McCalla-Smith, Miss Philone
Mantock, Miss Jessica Campbell and Mrs Heather Prendergast. The data collection
activities were managed Mrs Merville Anderson, Director of Field Services assisted by
Mr Herbert Wallace, Senior Field Supervisor as Country Field Coordinator. Mr Mirko
Morant led the map preparation activities. Miss Day-Dawn Simon, Head, Research and
Development Unit, had responsibility for the development of the classification system
for coding occupation and industry. Mr. Douglas Forbes, Director of Surveys and Mr
Hubert Sherrard, Senior Statistician had specific responsibility for sample selection and
