The data presented in Table (viii) show the distribution of the population in specific age
groups and the changes between 2001 and 2011. The data reflect not only the fertility
declines discussed previously, with the declining percentages in the youngest age
groups, but also the ageing of the population as reflected in the increased percentages at
the oldest ages.

In the 2011 Census the number of people under age 15 years numbered approximately
702,800 or 26 per cent of the total population. This represents a decline in numbers of
over 135,000 persons. The younger working age population, ages 15-44 years
