REVISION OF BOUNDARIES
In the process of mapping boundaries for censuses boundaries of EDs and
special areas are very often revised to take account of population shifts.
In cases where there has been significant population change (increase or decline),
oversized EDs may be split into two or more parts and undersized EDs merged
with one or more neighbouring EDs in order to re-establish the average
population size of the ED. Either change would result in a change of the
boundaries of the original ED.
Over time, ED boundaries may disappear, become difficult or may simply be no
longer appropriate because of the changes in the physical or built up
environment. New features would then have to be selected to replace the old
outdated features.
