Executive class - a social evil

Published: Thursday | March 19, 2009

One only has to take a ride on one of Kingston's blue and white coaster buses, otherwise known as the 'Executive Class,' to taste one of the social evils which plague the city.

Apart from the drivers' frequently displayed lack of respect for other motorists, there is also scant regard for the passengers as they (the bus drivers), often encouraged by their conductors, race one another, putting the passengers at risk - body, mind, and soul. The bus crew members continue to deviate from their dress codes and conductors, in particular, continue to exhibit their unkempt 'back yard' appearance while on their jobs.

It is observed that sometimes the drivers are seen being questioned by the relevant bus inspectors or interrogated by the police but somehow there seems to be a 'whisper' as, soon after, the reckless drivers and their buses are back on the roads.

The Transport Authority should be made to take responsibility for what they have been assigned to do in the interest of the public. Anyone should feel free to take public transport and feel comfortable without having to endure the promotion of gun-violence lyrics sounding from the outrageous sound systems on the buses. This still happens.

When will the Transport Authority listen to the cries of the travelling public who pay their fares? When will the responsible government agency open its eyes and effect some positive changes in this stagnant, evil transportation system? Meanwhile, it is a pity that commuters have such a cross to bear.

I am, etc.,
