The Ministry of National Security is pushing ahead with plans to improve the communi-cations facilities of the agencies under its control.

Security minister Colonel Trevor MacMillan yesterday signed a contract valued at US$1.5 million (J$130 million) with the American firm Motorola to enhance the communications technology of the police force, the army and the Department of Correctional Services.

Under the contract, Motorola will supply radios (mobiles, portables and control-base stations) and accessories for the three entities.

The new radios will, among other things, help with connecting Jamaica Defence Force helicopters and police personnel on the ground during joint operations.

The Department of Correctional Services will also be accom-modated on the new radio network and allow for operational links with the police and the army.

Other public-sector agencies, including the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, the Fire Service and the Ministry of Health, will also have access to the network when dealing with emergencies and disaster management.
