Norman Manley High at it again!

Science students and teachers from Norman Manley High School once again proved their scientific prowess by copping one of three first-place awards at the second leg of the 2009 Jamaica Public Service (JPS) Science and Technology Exposition yesterday.

By bagging the grades 10-11 category, the inner-city school inched closer to achieving its record-breaking bid of winning a third national title.

While Norman Manley are the defending champions, a shift in the awards structure will prohibit the school from defending its overall national title.

Many champions

If successful at the national level this year, the high school can only be crowned national champion for the grades 10-11 category.

Instead of having an overall champion, the organisers decided to crown champions for the different categories.

Norman Manley's first win was in 2004. The day's other winners were Mona Preparatory School and the College of Agriculture, Science and Education. The institutions won the grades four-six and tertiary categories, respectively. No winner was crowned in the grades seven-nine category.

The winners received cash awards, trophies, plaques and gift items.

Sectional prize winners

St Mary High, Linstead Primary and Junior High, as well as José Marti Technical High School, took home three of the sectional prizes.

The expo was staged at the Knutsford Court Hotel. The third leg is scheduled for Montego Bay in April.

The Ruthven Road hotel was invaded by youthful innovations and electrifying enthusiasm to boot. Approximately 40 exhibitions were expected to be displayed by the 32 schools that participated in the expo.

All winners from the three regional expos will compete for the top prizes in the different categories at the national finals on April 22 at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel.

The expo is held in collaboration with the Scientific Research Council and the Association of Science Teachers of Jamaica.
