Track frenzy! Athletes vie for honours at four meets

Four track and field meets are on today, headlined by the Central Hurdles and Relays, along with the Herb McKenley Classic, North Central Development and the Big Shot Invitational meetings.
At G.C. Foster College in Spanish Town, two new events, the 100 and 400 metres for males and females, are the added attractions at today's Central Hurdles and Relays.
Defending Girls' Champs winners Holmwood Technical, Edwin Allen, Manchester High and Vere Technical, along with Wolmer's Girls, have been confirmed for today's meet.
At Stadium East, Calabar High School's track and field manage-ment team will host the Herb McKenley Classic in honour of one of Jamaica's greatest athletes of all time.
Events down for competition and open to all classes, clubs and institutions are the 100m, 400m, 1500m, 400m and sprint hurdles and the 4x400-metre open relay.
The field events offered are the triple, long and high jumps and the shot put boys and girls open. Entries will be accepted at the meet.
At St Hugh's High School, the fifth renewal of the Big Shot Invitational throwing meet will take place.
So far, entries have already been confirmed for over 20 schools, including respective defending champions Calabar and Holm-wood, along with title-chasing Manchester High, Edwin Allen, Vere Technical, St Jago, Wolmer's, Kingston College, Munro, Dunoon Technical and Buff Bay High from Portland.
The discus and shot put, in all classes, for boys and girls are the events to be contested.
At Kaiser Sports Club in Discovery Bay, the north-central track and field meet will offer over $500,000 in prizes.
The events to be contested are the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 3,000m for girls, 5,000m for boys, shot put and discus, along with the 4x400m and 4x100m relays.
