Kayon Williams, 19:
This week, Saturday Life takes a sip of the preferred home-made Jamaican teas of Kayon Williams, 19.
5. Cerasee
It doesn't have a pleasant taste, but it has a lot of health benefits and you can either drink this tea hot or cold. Cerasee is said to purify the blood and gives one healthy-looking skin. I got to keep my skin looking as radiant as ever!
4. Ginger
This is the best tea to drink when the time is cold! It gives you a tingling feeling in your throat when you drink it, almost like something spicy. Ginger tea is one of the best teas to drink for abdominal pain. This is one tea that my grandmother always made for me when I told her that my tummy hurt.
3. Mint
I have this beautiful mint tree at my house, among others. When you prepare a cup of mint tea and take a sip, you get a refreshing feeling as if you're drinking a cold beverage ... and the tea is hot! This tea can either be sweetened with milk or sugar and I enjoy it morning, noon or night. I think this may be one the most popular teas in Jamaica because almost everybody loves it.
2. Fever grass
This is also grown in my garden at home. This grass is grown specifically to make tea, and believe me when I say you can hardly find a leaf on it in the morning to make tea! All my family members enjoy fever grass, so as a leaf grows, it is taken and boiled!
I like the aroma of the tea when it is being boiled, it has a very pleasant smell. Of course, it also tastes wonderful!
1. Chocolate
This is delicious when it is home-made. The process of making chocolate tea is rather interesting and gives it a special taste. Let me tell you a little about how my grandfather used to make chocolate tea. First, he extracted the seeds from the cocoa fruit and placed them on a zinc surface in the sun to dry, then they are beaten in a mortar into a powdery state.
He does some more stuff to it to turn it into a solid bar. With the finished product, you just grater it in your pot of boiling water, put in some nutmeg, season and sweeten it! Best tea for your breakfast with ackee and salt fish!
