Wonderful Jamaica, but ...

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Having just returned from our first Caribbean holiday, Jamaica has left its mark. Negril is the ideal destination, its beaches are beautiful and the people friendly.

I do despair that change will come - and not for the better. We visited some beautiful places like Dunn's River Falls, which was spoiled by modernisation too far, admittedly needed for all the right reasons; but I fear for other developments.

Roaring River village gave us the friendliest, most intimate and lasting impression of the real jewel in Jamaica's crown: its people. We enjoyed the sights while there and the steps, railings and lights made visiting the cave more practical. I fear a Dunn's River development would kill the village and area.

Visitors could be car-parked a mile and a half down and any shops or stalls, etc, could be sited there too. But to destroy a way of life that has existed from day one would be a crime against Jamaica.

I hope my comments reach the right ears. Thanks, Jamaica.

I am, etc.,
