The real American heroes

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The United States of America now has a black president. But while people of African heritage worldwide revel in this momentous milestone signifying the considerable progress of the race, with the elevation of a black man to the highest office in the world, let us spare a thought of homage to the real American heroes.

These are the predominantly white segment of the American electorate who themselves have managed to show a significant level of cultural enlightenment in helping to facilitate the landslide victory of a black man, despite the availability of a perfectly suitable white counterpart.

Triumphant

The black race is indeed a mighty, triumphant one, and we celebrate Obama for his ability to have grasped this opportunity to express this fact through the most emphatic medium possible.

But let's also celebrate white America for its ability to overcome its dark history of racial bigotry & for giving renewed credence to the assertion that America is indeed the "land of opportunity".

I am, etc.,
