Holmwood's Russell stars at track meet

Holmwood Technical's Janieve Russell was the star at yesterday's WATA/Powerade/Jamaica College (JC) Invitational track & field meet, the first of 2009, at the school's Old Hope Road ground.

Russell, a Class three athlete, won three events, including a meet record leap of 5.62m in the long jump, which erased Immaculate High's Meisha-Gaye DaCosta's 2006 mark of 5.37m.

Her other victories came in the high jump (1.70m) and 80m hurdles (11.80).

At press time, Shaneka Thomas of Vere, who leapt 1.75m to better her record of 1.70m set last year in the Class two girls' high jump, was confirmed as the other record breaker.

Manchester High's Natoya Goule and Kamal Fuller of Wolmer's were double winners at the meet. Fuller won the boys' 110m hurdles in 14.30 and took the long jump title with a leap of 7.25m.

Goule (10:47.42), in the girls' 3000m open, led home a trio of Manchester High girls in the 3000m open, led home a trio of Manchester High girls in the 3000m open. She also took the 800m in 2:19.30. Neisha Morgan (12:08.52) and Kimberly Brown (12:38.46) finished second and third respectively.

In the sprint hurdles, Holmwood dominated, winning three of the four girls' events.

Andrea Segree (14.00) beat Manchester High's Leslie-Ann Mitchell (14.10) in the Class One 100m event; Russell, the Class Three 80m event, ahead of Manchester's Shay-Ann Holness (11.83) and Yanique Thompson (11.00) in the Class Four 70m event.

Patrick Campbell of Munro College (14.90) took the boys' Class Two 110m hurdles, while Twane Gordon of Ardenne (14.00) topped the field in the 100m hurdles class three.

Topped the field

In the 800m, Vere's pair of Raska Johnson (2:28.10) and Shericka Jackson (2:30.10) topped Class Three while Venesha Taylor (2:30.14) and Shantea Mclean (2:30.30), both of Holmwood, were first and second respectively in Class Two.

Duval Ashley of Wolmer's (2:05.57) and Romain Hedman of JC Emergency (2:11.64) took the boys' Class Two and Three 800m events.

In the field, Candicea Bernard (13.17m) and Micara Vassell (12.59m), both of St Hugh's, topped the girls' shot put open.

Edwin Allen's Shanice Lewis leapt 4.95m for the girls' Class Four long jump title.
