Shaggy and Friends

Members of the organising committee (from left), Robert Livingston, Jacqui Tyson and Sharon Burke, at the Shaggy and Friends organising committee meeting at 1 Millsborough Cresent, St Andrew, last month.

The verdict is in; the party of the week in review is none other than the Shaggy and Friends charity event, held at Jamaica House in St Andrew on Saturday, January 3.

WHAT WORKED

The superb attentiveness of the Scotiabank team that ushered patrons to their seats, were very informative and made sure all was well upon arrival.

WHAT BOMBED

The endless six-course dinner, far too long between each course with waiters even asking guests what they had eaten already.

FUNNIEST LINE

"Not for sold," the response to a guest's quip by someone showing items for auction.

MOST PROFOUND UTTERING

Many were heard saying that perhaps the time has come to re-name the hospital to receive the funds, Shaggy's Hospital for Children.

LESSON LEARNT

Jamaicans sure have their priorities where the want them because many were making frantic calls on Saturday afternoon when $20,000 and $10,000 tickets were sold out. Some even lamented that they would have to "settle for" $5,000 tickets. Perhaps the auto industry in the US should come down here for a bailout!

DON'T SAY WE SAID

... that one company had to be coaxed into increasing its donation of kind.

BIG SPENDERS

1. Media houses that donated free air and print time and space

2. Seafood and poultry and other raw material for the menu - all donated.

3. Cool millions from corporate giants.

4. Hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of products from liquor and beverage companies.

5. Hefty discounts and/or free service from the decorator, caterers, hotel, hireage company, tent supplier and other support personnel.

6. Thousands of yards of fabric from the popular fabric store.

7. Talent from the artistes who performed for free.

8. Valuable help from Shaggy's manager.

Kudos to Jacqui Tyson and her team for pulling this off.
