Swing By is dead - The classy five-year-old mare
Published: Friday | December 19, 2008
According to reports, SWING BY, who won both the 1000 Guineas and Jamaica Oaks at Caymanas Park as a three-year-old in April, 2006, returned from Trinidad last Saturday for stud purposes and died on Sunday in quarantine at the airport, while being treated by a vet.
She was scheduled to stand for service at the Orange Valley Estates Limited in Trelawny. A dark bay mare by Alisios out of Skip By, SWING BY was owned by Trinidadian businessman Bernard Dulal-Whiteway and bred by Troy Alexander. She was trained locally by Wayne DaCosta and in 2006 won four races and $3.3 million in stakes, despite racing for only the first eight months of the season.
SWING BY was sent to Trinidad for the Royal Oak Derby in September of 2006, but was forced out of the race after she was mistakenly administered a prohibitive substance by a Trinidadian vet. She remained in Trinidad and enjoyed a highly successful campaign in the twin island republic, winning a number of important over sprint and middle distance races last year to become of the top horses over there in 2007.
