With the festive season just around the corner and the effects of the global economic crisis tightening the pockets of the average Jamaican shopper, some retailers are remaining optimistic that customers will catch the spending bug.
Michael Ammar Jr, owner of the Ammar's and Amart stores, told The Gleaner the stores would be fully stocked for the holidays. In fact, Ammar said the stores would be in great shape for Christmas shoppers.
However, to ease the pressure off the pockets of shoppers, Ammar said the stores would focus on carrying less-expensive brands. The quality of products, he added, would not be compromised.
"We are carrying quality brands that are at a better price," he said.
Peter Martin, owner of Collectibles, a clothing and shoe chain, told The Gleaner that while he expected reduced consumer expenditure, he still believes shoppers will turn out in reasonable numbers.
To encourage early shopping, Martin said the stores are currently having pre-Christmas giveaways, offering up to 80 per cent off selected items. The sale ends this weekend.
"We are encouraging people to come out early and avoid the rush," he noted.
Meanwhile, Norris Clarke, general manager for the Lee's 5th Avenue stores, said there are no sales planned for the Yuletide season.
However, Clarke mentioned that the stores will be carrying new brands for the season, which he hopes will lure customers.
