A home-made gun and 34 pairs of scissors were among several weapons confiscated during a search of a Corporate Area school earlier this month.

Although no arrests were made, Deputy Superintendent Clement Logan, operations officer for the St Andrew Central Division, said a collaboration of efforts between the Ministry of Education and schools of interest is ongoing to re-educate youths about violence and offensive weapons.

"We work in close collaboration with the Ministry of Education and guidance counsellors," Logan said. "We talk to these people from time to time to get the children to understand that these are dangerous practices."

Despite the success of this initiative, Logan stressed that the police and schools have to remain vigilant. The offensive weapons were displayed at the Half-Way Tree Police Station, St Andrew Central, yesterday.

"We have a number of schools in the division, which we visit from time to time. Sometimes we talk and sometimes we search, but we have a team that is committed to community safety and this is a result of one of these searches," he said.
