  • Abstinence in Uganda

Relative to Mrs Tyson's article on the issue of whether we should be issuing condoms in schools, where she made mention of a campaign of abstinence in Uganda, I can verify that that campaign does exist in Uganda.

I can't speak to its success or lack thereof, but I have been to Uganda as recently as mid-November, seen those billboard ads along the way from Entebbe to Kampala, and throughout the capital city. From my short stay and casual observation, there seems to be an acceptance of this message, as I did speak with a few young people on the topic, and they did seem to be believers. Mrs Tyson must have done some research on this issue so I will accept her conclusions of the success of the Uganda programme. I share her view also that it could work in Jamaica.

  • Engineering prospects

I write in support of the views expressed by Mr R. Robinson in a letter to the Editor on Saturday, December 6, captioned 'UWI and engineers'. Another dimension as to why we might not have many more of our young people going into engineering is because far too many of these students' maths and physics teachers are engineers who could not find a job in their chosen field. These teachers oftentimes discourage their students not to choose engineering as the job prospects are no too good.

  • Problems with pronouns

It appears that our advertising agencies are joining the movement to merge singular and plural pronouns! This morning, I heard a series of radio promos from different bodies in which it was stated, "Such and such an organisation is announcing their Christmas event." Pity the poor teacher who is trying to have children get their pronouns to agree with the antecedents! "Mr Smith is earning his degree"; "Miss Jones is preparing her lessons"; but "The hardware store is improving their service"? Has 'its' become a bad word?

  • Jamaica needs healing

Jamaica needs healing oil to let the focus of God be the centre of the hearts, especially the murderers and those who do wrong in the society. Jamaica is a rich country with a lot of resources, such as for agriculture to feed ourselves. Agriculture is the primary producer of all foods, and it is so sad to see what has happened to the sector in past years. The lands are here. idle hands are here, especially those in the correctional facilities.
