  • Surf's up at Yallahs High

Yallahs High, a western St Thomas school, has become the first school in Jamaica to offer surfing as an extra-curricular option for students, the Jamaica Surfing Association (JSA) said in a recent release.

According to the release, the school has received a donation of three new surfboards, courtesy of the Tai family of Yallahs. The donation was made at assembly on Monday.

JSA president Billy Wilmot was upbeat about the development. He said surfing in schools had always been a dream of the JSA.

"Now, with this support from within the community, it is only a matter of time before young children from St Thomas will begin to make their mark in the surfing world," Wilmot said.

The intention, explained Wilmot, is to expand the programme to other schools around the eastern seaboard, ultimately resulting in the establishment of the Jamaica National Scholastic Surfing Championships which would see schools competing for National Championship honours in a series of events held around the northeast and southeast coastal areas.

Other schools interested in getting involved in the schools surfing programme can contact the JSA at jasurfas@hotmail.com or phone 750-0103 for further information.
