With expectations of an increase in commercial activities at the island's post offices, the Postal and Telecommunications Department has proposed to extend its opening hours to the public during the festive season.

"It is likely that we could see more letters and parcels coming in than going out," said Gordon Brown, public relations and marketing manager for the postal service, who spoke with The Gleaner yesterday.

Although the postal service will not be hiring additional staff, Brown said temporary personnel are on standby if there is a need to beef up its numbers.

No help from USPS

This is unlike in previous years, when the United States Postal Service (USPS) would assist the Caribbean Postal Union (CPU) during the Yuletide season with programmes to fast-track the service.

"This year, the USPS will not be financing any programmes to assist the CPU," Brown disclosed.

Minister of Mining and Telecommunications Derrick Smith told The Gleaner yesterday that Christmas would bring seasonal high mail volume that would result in a significant increase in overall volume.

"Every year, at this time, special measures are implemented to ensure the smooth flow of the mail. The plan has worked successfully over the years, but we continue to refine and upgrade the strategies," Smith said.

He further stressed that in October, discussions were held with cargo carriers, IBC and Amerijet to facilitate the movement of mail to and from the United States, which is Jamaica's major source of mail.

Special postage rates

In the meantime, the Post and Telecommunications Department said it had special postage rates for those sharing the Christmas spirit by mailing greeting cards to their loved ones.

People wishing to take advantage of the special rates must mail Christmas cards in unsealed envelopes between November 17 and December 31.

According to Brown, the expected increase in mail is not yet evident. He said people usually wait until the last minute to send off their letters and packages.

"The increase (in postage) usually manifests itself late in the holiday season," he added.
