Customs auctioning unclaimed goods
published: Wednesday | November 26, 2008

Tashieka Mair, Gleaner Writer

WESTERN BUREAU:

In a bid to dispose of goods that have been stored over time, the collector of customs in Montego Bay has invited interested parties to a public auction at the Queen's Warehouse at the Sangster International Airport in St James.

The auction, which is scheduled for December 22 at 10 a.m., will include the sale of sundry items which will be sold on an 'as-is, where-is' basis. This means that the bid on an item, even if it is damaged, will be valid and, therefore, the collector of customs will not assume responsibility for any errors made in describing the goods, or offer any warrantee or refunds on any items purchased.

According to Collector of Customs Cordelia Brown, if people are guilty of not clearing their shipment within the required period, Customs has the opportunity of doing so before the auction.

"The law states that persons have 14 days in which to clear their shipment," Brown said. "However, they still have the option to clear the goods up to the day of the auction."

She added: "However, once the auction has started, they cannot clear these items."

The items to be auctioned include personal effects such as clothing, computers and food items, among other categories of goods.

Members of the public who wish to take part in the auction are required to register at the Queen's Warehouse (SIA), Norman Manley International Airport or the Queen's Warehouse at 230 Spanish Town Road from Monday-Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The process requires that they submit two passport-size photographs, their TRN card and a valid ID.

A sales list for the items to be auctioned is being displayed for viewing at customs houses - Newport East, Kingston, Queen's Warehouse - 230 Spanish Town Road and Montego Bay, Norman Manley and Sangster International airports.

The acceptable forms of payment at the auction include debit cards, cheques and cash. However, purchases using manager's cheques will not receive the items until the banks have cleared these cheques.
